In its next-to-last game of the regular season, the ETSU women’s basketball team narrowly lost to Samford with a final score of 56-51.
Following a four-game winning streak, ETSU lost on Feb. 18 against Mercer and fell again on Feb. 20 to Samford.
The last time the Bucs played the Bulldogs on Jan. 21, they lost 55-47.
“I know that we are ready to play,” said senior guard Shamauria Bridges (Miramar, Fla.) when asked about the preparedness of the team before the game.
Bridges scored the game-high against Samford with 16 points.
Along with Bridges, Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Sadasia Tipps (Hickory, N.C.) were also able to score in the double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Guard Chandler Christopher (Greenville, Tenn.) scored seven points, while forward Shomari Kendrick (Lexington, KY) had four rebounds.
This was the last home game for both seniors.
Although the Bucs finished the game strongly, they did not lead for the first time until halfway into the second quarter.
“We just have to keep coming in with the same mindset to win the game, play by play, and actually play harder in the first half instead of waiting until the end of the game when the game’s on the line,” Bridges said.
Even though they had an overall loss, ETSU led the game in three-point field goal percentage with 36 percent and free throw percentage with 63 percent. The Bucs had 35 total rebounds.
The team has an overall record of 16-12 and a conference record of 8-5.
The next game for the Bucs will be on Feb. 27 at Chattanooga. This will be the last game of the regular season for the team.
