The ETSU women’s tennis team improved their over-all record to 9-4 on the sunny Saturday afternoon of April 1.

The Bucs defeated the Mercer Bears 4-3 at Dave Mullins Tennis Complex, bringing the Bucs to an impressive 4-0 record in conference play. The Bucs are now on a six match winning streak and have not lost at home all season.

Yi Chi Ma (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) singles victory over Mercers Marie Mottet was just what the Bucs needed, as her point pushed the Buccaneers to the winner circle and making her 6-6 in the 2017 season.

Ma and Mottet battled it out in three sets but ultimately Ma proved to be the better of the two, after winning the last set 6-1

Other singles winners were sophomore Marina Guinart Espana (Castellar Del Valles, Spain) sweeping her opponent in two sets and junior transfer from MTSU Alory Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

Pereira and Mercers Anna Sovic went back and fourth but Pereira got the better of Sovis beating her in the last set 6-3. Pereira is now 9-3 in solo play in the 2017 season.

The doubles team of Ioanna Markesini (Athens, Greece) and Espana and doubles team of Juniors, Jayde Viccars (Glen Waverley, Australia) and Melissa Esguerra (Derrimutt, Australia) also contributed to the ETSU win, by quickly shutting down their challengers and controlling their matches with ease.

Head coach Ricardo Rojas looked quite pleased with how his team preformed and is confident that this win will carry on to Thursday, April 6th when the Bucs head to Spartanburg, South Carolina to take on Wofford at 1 p.m.

The men’s tennis team took on Southern Conference rival, Samford. Beating the Bulldogs 5-2 and becoming 5-0 in conference play. This win adds to the Bucs win streak, at a total of seven now.

Four out of the six single matches played were won by the Buccaneers. Senior David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) beat Samford’s Justin Ghavami in two sets.

Also winning for the Bucs were Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain), David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) and taking the win in three sets was Senior Diego Nunez (Monterrey, Mexico).

ETSU ran the doubles competition, winning all three matches.

Nunez and Herrera defeated Bulldogs Jake Faundez and Eduardo L. Sanchez 6-1, the team of Gonzalez and Wenceslao Albin (Salliquelo, Argentina) also beat their competitors 6-1. Biosca and Freshman Juan Lugo (Venezuela) defeated their opponent 6-2.
