Upon entering the Ball Hall, the viewers are greeted by art at the Slocumb Galleries with the glass display in the lobby featuring the multimedia works by CORE students who are freshman and sophomore, with the juror’s choice for this category conferred to ‘Escaping Consumerism’ by Raina Nief.
Slocumb Gallery I at the right side features diverse media of fibers, photography, prints, graphic design, and jewelry & metalsmith works. The wall parallel to the hallway shows graphic design with Taylor Campbell’s poster entitled ‘Move to Jupiter’, as awardee for this category.
Adjacent are the printmaking works, with the juror’s awardee in this category, Arizona Clawson for her collagraph prints, ‘13%’ and ‘November’. Both students, alongside Katie Watts, awarded for ‘Overgrown’, the 2nd place for TN Craft award and ‘Downed Logs’, awarded Arrowmont Craft Honorable Mention, and Tess Montana, awardee for Drawing for her work ‘Pretty Lips’, are all senior BFA students.
Each have recently exhibited their BFA Senior Exhibitions at The Reece Museum and the Slocumb Galleries.
Continuing along the long wall are the photography works, with winner in this category, Jeremy Fahn, for both his pieces ‘Close Distance’ and ‘Meaningless Stare’.
In the middle of the gallery are sculptures and jewelry & metals work, with award for the former, going to Kalliope Strapp for Masculine vs Feminine, and for the latter, to Emily Johnson for a lobster necklace in copper and acrylic titled Delicacy.
TN Craft’s first-place winner, Hannah Schean’s owl necklace entitled ‘The Eye of the Night’, is to the left on a pedestal with TN Craft third place ‘Heron’ metal sculpture by Avery Myers, is diagonal to the right. Behind these are the fibers work, with Alexis Whitaker, an intro to fibers student who won the category award with her piece ‘Interruption.’
In the left side is Slocumb Gallery II, wit the walls adorned by large scale paintings, drawings, ceramics, and visual media. The extended media award went to Brooke Day’s video ‘Equally Human’. Day also received the top honors of Faculty Award for her sculpture entitled, ‘Seated and Lovely’.
Prominently displayed are large paintings on the long back wall with painting juror’s choice, an oil abstract painting ‘Manhandling’ by Ashlyn York and ‘To Love and To Cherish’ by Katie Murphy as Honorable Mention for Arrowmont Art. The ceramics award was given to Kelly Dorton for her ceramic cup installation of the 45 US Presidents entitled ‘Alternative Quotes’.
The Best of Show award is also stoneware ceramic assemblage, a dinner set titled Reflection by Elizabeth Rees, who also took courses on social practice under the Extended Media program.
The prizes were generously sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama of Knoxville, Tennessee Crafts, Nelson Fine Art & Framing, Fletcher H. Dyer Memorial Fund, Wyatt Mood Memorial Fund, Highwater Clays, the Honors College and the Faculty of Art & Design. The refreshments during the reception were provided by Marco’s Pizza, Daylight Donuts and Fresh Market.
Slocumb Galleries are located on ETSU campus in Ball Hall, 232 Sherrod Drive, with summer hours on weekdays from 10 a.m to 4 p.m., extended hours until 6pm on Thursdays.. All events are free and open to public.
