On Sept. 13, 2022 spoken word artist Ashlee Haze performed for students, staff and the community.

Ashlee Haze is a poet and spoken word artist from Atlanta, Georgia. She has been a part of the Atlanta Poetry Circuit for over a decade and has been writing over 15 years.

Spoken word is a term used for poetry intended to be performed. Spoken word is rarely ever written down and usually is only performed by speaking. Spoken word can encompass or contain elements of rap, hip-hop, storytelling, theater, jazz, rock, blues and folk music. This genre usually takes on issues such as politics, social justice and racial issues. Spoken word resembles slam poetry.

Ashlee Haze also recently appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk series, a very popular series for fans of musical performers, alongside other performers of spoken word and other genres of performing. She performed alongside composer Blood Orange.

Haze also hosts “Moderne Philosophy”, formerly known as “Haze’s Higher Learning”, which is an educational podcast. This podcast strives to make personal growth and business education accessible in a non-traditional environment. On her website, she writes that the mission is, “To make self-mastery, business, and social justice education accessible in non-traditional environments through the cultivation of wonder, ethics, and authenticity.”

Haze thoroughly enjoys touring colleges and completed a 100+ city college tour in 2017. ETSU is very excited to host an artist who strives to make a difference in the lives of the people she performs for, along with making a change in the political world she lives in.
