Personal training at ETSU makes well-designed exercise programs available for students and employees.
The free program is designed to help clients improve their cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, body composition and strength.
The trainer meets with the client to determine what their personal workout will be.
“A person comes in and we get their goals and then we create a program from that,” said Angel Elderkin, fitness graduate assistant in Campus Recreation.
During the first visit, the trainer determines the client’s body fat, along with an evaluation of what fitness activities the client needs to focus on. The client fills out a consent form so that no one is held accountable for injury except for the client.
A total of six visits are required for this program, but this year, due to the shortage of clients, the trainers have been meeting with their clients more than required, Elderkin said. Along with the shortage of clients, a shortage of faculty is apparent, which leaves only four trainers to handle the work.
The shortage of clients this year could be partly due to lack of advertisement, or also the uncomfortable facility. Advertis-ing has become Elderkin’s responsibility this year.
“Some people don’t like the atmosphere down there,” Elderkin said, referring to the basement weight room in Brook’s Gym.
The availability of the Center for Physical Activity that is currently under construction will hopefully help to increase the clientele because the program is limited right now, Elderkin said.
A first-year incentive Home-coming Race has been made available for the training clients as well. The personal training program pays the fees for anyone who wants to participate, which gives an incentive for the clients, since this is the first time this has been offered for them.
The race will be held Oct. 29. Training program clients have participated in the race for the past 10 years. Clients can walk, run or jog the 3.1 miles, whichever the client feels the most comfortable doing.
Along with the race, the training program is made available so that the clients can participate and feel comfortable about exercising and they can overcome their fear of weight rooms and become active, Elderkin said.
“They just want to feel comfortable about going into the weight room . my goal is to just get these people out doing stuff and being active.
