The Cowards’ new CD release, STD, is packed with energy and fast-paced music that you can’t stop listening to the lyrics of love, loss of love, heartbreak and ghost stories.
Their first song on the album, “Smash,” is about heartbreak from a love that’s been lost and the rage that ensues after the breakup.
The song then jumps into the second track with a drumroll to begin “Meet in New York” which is about leaving love and the possibility of finding it again in New York.
By far, the best song on the Album is “Lucky.”
“Whose afraid of the big bad girl/ Look her in the eyes and Ohh/ you never know/ you might just get lucky tonight.”
The song details the fear that may be involved in trying to date again after a bad break-up with a significant other.
But don’t worry if you heed to the band’s lyrics in “Lucky,” then you might just be “Coming Back,” which has a slow beat but hip sound.
“Coming Back” offers the new relationship that is found again and the normal activities that come back after dating for a while.
“Mrs.Lackey” is about a ghost story. The band tells of a ghost named Mrs. Lackey who roamed the halls of their home.
“I know a woman/ I can see right through/ even though she passed away in 1982/ now she lives with me/ in the house on the hill/ she haunts my heart even still.”
With only 10 tracks in 37 minutes, the band pumps up with rock beats that seem almost retro, yet pop.
A good way to explain their style is like the band’s favorite beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon – a little harsh and bitter, but a good drink to escape the woes of the day.
If you mix a little bit of Lit’s style with Cake, you have the band’s motif.
A perfect mix of music considering that the band has put a caution on the back of the CD case that says the record should be Played Incredibly Loud!
The nearly 3-year-old Nashville-born band will be playing at the Casbah on Saturday.
The band will be opening for hot local rock band Pace. So for a spirited concert check them out.
