Life can be stressful for college students with classwork and jobs keeping them busy, but with some spare time, Dossett Hall President Christy McConville tries to make sure plenty of activities are available in which students can participate.
McConville and the Dossett Hall council officers have scheduled activities throughout the fall semester with the busiest times being the beginning of school and Homecoming.
“The main reason (for the activities) is to get people involved in college life,” McConville said. “People don’t know each other, especially freshmen and it gives them a chance to form their support groups.”
Many of the freshmen living in dorm rooms are getting their first taste of being on their own and are looking for something to fill their days besides classwork.
“The activities are important so students get involved in something other than school work,” McConville said. “It also helps them see new faces besides those they see in class everyday.”
McConville and her fellow officers try to schedule a variety of activities during the semester including fundraisers and social events.
“The fund raisers are usually not very successful,” she said. “The socials are much better, students just want to have a good time and not be responsible for anything than just having fun in their spare time.”
Some of the fundraisers that McConville said were successful were candy sales during Homecoming week in which Dossett Hall officers sold lollipops dressed up as ghosts to celebrate Halloween.
Other fundraisers include T-shirt decorating, car washes and they are planning to decorate reindeer crafts for the holiday season.
The fundraisers are important to raise money so the hall can afford food for social events and activities.
With all the activities and events that McConville helps schedule for students, some problems occur.
“Some of the most frequent are vandalism, stealing food out of the (hall kitchen) refrigerator, fights between women,” she said. “But its not that much, mostly everyone gets along and the ones that don’t stay away from each other.”
Dossett Hall has a variety of students from freshmen to seniors living in the dorm rooms.
“We have a mixture,” McConville said. “We have some girls who start out as freshmen and came back each semester until they’re seniors.”
McConville believes dorm life is a valuable experience for students away from home.
