Former pro golfer Katie Weiss was recently hired as the new women’s golf coach.
“I was determined not to solve a long-term problem with a short-term solution,” said Todd Stansbury, ETSU athletic director. “I wanted someone who would bring energy to the program; someone with that sparkle in their eye.”
Weiss, a former pro on the SBC-place Future’s tour and the Player’s West tour, she recorded nine top-20 finishes during her career, included a fifth and eighth place finish.
Weiss also has a wealth of experience in golf instruction. Previously she directed golf lessons at Charwood Country Club in Columbia, S.C. While instated there, Weiss created and directed the Charwood Junior Golf School.
On the collegiate level, Weiss played at the University of South Carolina from 1994 through 1997.
She experienced both the intense competition of collegiate sports and the excitement associated with the NCAA Tournament.
“I think I can bring experience to the program and help bring ETSU to a national level,” Weiss said.
`”I’m looking forward both to meeting the girls and to the opportunity at ETSU.”
Perhaps women’s golf has lain dormant at ETSU for some time, but if Weiss has anything to say about it, they are not about to go gently into that good night.
