ETSU is implementing stricter safety and security measures at Memorial Center and Brooks Gym.
Because of the winter season, many non-ETSU patrons have sought out and gained access to these buildings for recreational purposes.
“Nine months out of the year we do a pretty good job of admitting only those folks with a connection to the university,” said Bill Toohey, assistant director and building coordinator of Memorial Center. “December, January and February are our busiest months because people are trying to escape the cold.”
Under the security policy, users can only enter Memorial Center through two doors located on the lower levels of the east and west side after 4:30 p.m.
Likewise, Brooks Gym will only be accessible via the front doors.
“Evenings are going to be tighter and we’ll be paying a little bit more attention to who is allowed in the buildings,” Toohey said.
In addition, users will be required to present valid ETSU identification or a community recreation pass in order to enter the buildings after 4:30 p.m.
“It’s important for everyone to carry their ID with them wherever they go,” Toohey said. “Otherwise they won’t be allowed in the building.”
The safety policy also requires that an adult supervise persons under 18.
“This is mainly for liability reasons,” Toohey said. “If a child gets injured, the university could face legal action, so we want parents to know that they are supposed to keep track of their kids.”
The measures are being enforced for the benefit of students, faculty, and alumni he said.
“We want the people who are paying for it to have first access to the facilities,” Toohey said.
The changes are expected to curtail unauthorized use of Memorial Center and Brooks Gym, allowing students to have more access to courts and equipment.
“We’re not where we need to be just yet,” Toohey said, “We’re trying to close a few loopholes.”
