Are you looking for fun way to earn credits? Are you wondering what to do this summer? How about going to Scotland to study at one of the most prestigious universities in Europe?
Sound like a dream? It’s not. The Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, sponsored by the departments of English and Appalachian Scottish and Irish Studies, is offering a five week, second summer term course to make people aware of the tie between Scots-Irish and Appalachian cultures.
Students participating in the program will spend three weeks studying at the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh.
Participants can receive either three or six credit hours for the trip at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
“This is for people wanting to get college credit for going to one of the most beautiful cities in Europe but also to study and meet new people,” said Ted Olson, director of the program.
The program is open to any student of the university or member of the community.
People signing up for the course must register for it through ETSU and pay the normal ETSU tuition and fees.
Students will hear premier Scottish lecturers, take field trips to places everyday tourists don’t get to see, visit museums and restaurants, make new friends and soak up the local culture.
While in Scotland, students will stay in a flat, the Scottish equivalent of a dorm room. In each flat, there are five bedrooms and a central kitchen.
“You will feel remarkably at home there,” said Olson.
Deadline for the downpayment to participate in the Appalachian, Scottish and Irish Studies summer trip Scotland is due on Wed., Jan. 31.
The down payment required is $500 and the entire cost of the trip will be $2,500, which will cover most of the expenses including airfare, lodging, lecture fees, field trips and some food.
