Greetings brothers and sisters.
I trust that this finds you well, as our Lord is infinitely gracious to His children.
In Genesis 1:26 we are told that we are made in the image of God. Does this mean that God has fingers, toes, hair, lips, teeth?
Actually, it means that we are a triune being (having three parts, yet being a solitary being) as God is a triune being.
The three parts of God are God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
These are commonly, and understandably so, referred to as God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
We humans have the basic composition. We are soul, body, and spirit.
Our soul is who we are, our name, our actual life (or what is really alive in us) and the part of us that desires the affection of others.
Our body is the physical, audible, tangible us. It is that by which other people see, hear, recognize us. People know our voices, our faces, our scents, the feel of our skin and even if they cannot see us, they can know the structure of our face by touch.
Our spirit is our personality; our likes, dislikes, emotions and consciences. Our spirits attract people to us or push them away. They convey our wants and desires. Our spirits show our emotions: anger, happiness, sadness, complacency, fervor, passions, love, hate, fear, etc.
Although these are three very different divisions, we are still one person. And though God has three very different divisions, he is still only one God.
God the Father is the soul of God. The source of existence of the Trinity. The actual eternalness of God. The part of the Trinity that wants us to know him and love him.
God the Son is the body of the trinity. He is the face of God and the voice of God, the part of God that we can touch and see and recognize.
God the Holy Spirit is a little self-explanatory. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God, and the personality of God. It’s what God likes and dislikes. It’s the part of God that conveys his love for us and attracts us to him.
We come to know a person through their spirit and their body.
Their spirits are shown to us with their bodies in order that we should know their souls. The same is true with God. The love of God (an emotion that comes from the Spirit of God) is shown to us by the body of God, Christ, that we might come to know the soul of God. So in the same way that we know a friend or a family member, we can know God.
We can hear his voice through the Bible. We touch the body of God in communion. When we know God’s spirit we know his likes and dislikes.
So, in the way that we show affection for those we love with our bodies, God also showed us how much he loved us by the sacrifice of his body so that we could come to know him.
