Christian Student Fellowship is opening its spring and summer missions to students seeking service opportunities with a Christian focus.
The mission to Grundy Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Va., which houses approximately 200 elementary to high school-age students, is scheduled for March 10-17 and is still open for interested students.
Mike Luzadder, campus minister of CSF, said the cost of the trip is only that of going to and from Grundy Mountain Mission and that participants would need to bring a sleeping bag and “grungy” work clothes.
The mission is a work trip as opposed to a “teach and preach” trip, Luzadder said. Volunteers will be doing labor and physical tasks at the mission in addition to participating in activities with the residents.
Studley, England is the destination of the summer mission from May 19-June 2. In contrast to the Grundy trip which is a work and service opportunity, Luzadder said the purpose of the England trip is to “work with existing churches to make Christ’s message become clearer.”
“Our goal is to affect the community and the world with Christ’s message of salvation,” he said.
Luzadder said a small number of Britains affiliate themselves with a church and a desired result of the trip is a strengthening of the bond between the church and citizens.
In cooperation with local churches and church leaders, the participants will spread the word through Vacation Bible School, drama and music activities.
The students will also perform a community service project by cleaning up an abandoned and derelict gas station.
Luzadder said missions provide students with unique and important experiences by “stretching people beyond normal comfort zones.”
Beth Davis, 21, a senior in psychology, said, “We always get more in return.
“It’s an awesome experience just to be able to give a little of yourself.”
The cost of the summer trip is $1,500.
Interested applicants should contact Christian Student Fellowship by early March. For more information, call 928-2870.
