ETSU will soon have a bigger and better fitness facility with the upcoming opening of the Center for Physical Activity.
“The estimated date of completion is December 2001,” said Jon Kroll, assistant director of campus recreation. “That means that the grand opening is anticipated for sometime in January 2002 or early spring 2002.”
This new activity center, which is currently under construction near the track on campus, will have some of the same facilities as Brooks Gym.
“It is not replacing Brooks Gym, but it is a more comprehensive student facility,” Kroll said. “PE and ROTC will stay in Brooks as far as I know right now.”
The building is funded by ETSU student fees and will be open only to students, faculty and staff.
The checking of campus identification will be under more surveillance than previously at Brooks.
“There is a charter that specifically restricts use (to students),” Kroll said. “It (the center) will be strictly the fitness center, with no interruptions like intercollegiate ball games.”
Numerous new facilities will be available within the center.
“It is comprehensive, with a wide variety of cardiovascular equipment and free weights,” Kroll said.
Students will have the benefit of a higher quality swimming pool, three basketball courts and lighted fields.
The building will be constructed on two levels, with offices on the second level.
“Also there will be a pool area outside, sort of enclosed, that can be used for other events such as Preview,” Kroll said.
