“Party people, party people … can ya’ll get funky?” The legendary grandfathers of hip-hop, Afrikaan Bambaataa, had the right idea of an unforgettable bash when they used those words in their classic tune “Planet Rock.”
It is a known fact: most college students are on the constant search for that one unforgettable, absolutely amazing party.
According to two smart, ambitious students on campus, it seems that students in this area are thirsty for a really good time.
Allen Johnson and Howard Nix are putting together something they call “Exclusives,” which are area events for college students such as concerts, parties and fashion shows. These events are designed to give students an excuse to not always drive home on the weekends, and will be held on Fridays, Saturdays and sometimes Sundays.
“Right before Christmas of last year, we realized that there really isn’t too much to do here on the weekends,” Nix said. “We were inspired by the Russell Simmons movie, 24 hrs, and felt that as young men there was more that we needed to be doing.”
Nix and Johnson realized that many students leave on the weekends because they are tired of the same old hangouts. Their desire is to give everyone that loves to have a good time something that becomes a part of their college experience that they will never forget.
Nix explained that one crowd they are aiming to reach are the freshman and sophomore classes, because they are new, fresh and full of energy.
“We want the freshman and sophomores to have the time of their lives,” Nix said. “We’re looking for a certain crowd, and they’re out there, and there are a lot of them.”
Nix and Johnson already have some events lined up for the next month or so. The first event will be a huge party held in a hotel ballroom “to be announced” for Johnson’s birthday.
“I am also looking into some acts to be brought in from Atlanta,” Johnson said.
This project is not currently being funded by any student organization, “so everything is coming out of our pockets,” said Johnson. “For this to work, we have to get the word out.
“That is the main aim.”
Nix and Johnson ultimately want to bring everyone together, from every single sorority, fraternity, student group and social circle. They know that everyone just wants to have a good time, and that is what they want to deliver.
