Dear Editor:
I recently checked one of my favorite newspapers, only to be intrigued by what I read. An editorialist was spouting off his opinions like they came directly from the mouth of God.
His column was not really centered on saving non-believers, it was focused on the political aspects of his religion. His words were large and confusing. After reading one particular article (Protestant-Catholic conflict still rages on), I had a question.
If having a faith in Christianity involves me telling another person of my own faith to re-examine their beliefs, would I want to believe in the subject of their promotion? Why would an open-minded unbeliever like myself want to be drawn into an article on religious contradictions?
You could simply say “I strongly disagree with your opinion,” as opposed to using loaded phrases such as “That is absolutely ridiculous,” A jumbled mess of semantics only leads to argument, in which Mr. Roberts has immersed himself.
If it is your faith, and faith is different from fact, then who are you to assume an authority over a book that you didn’t write, and has been interpreted in hundreds of different ways by thousands of people to accommodate millions of different opinions? True, you all share a common belief in Jesus, but didn’t Jesus preach positive messages? I didn’t read a single phrase advocating the virtues of Christianity in the column.
I don’t admire your lofty and preachy views on what salvation is or isn’t, and your final-word authority on sinfulness is irritating. Reading one of your articles reminds me of sitting in an old medieval cathedral on a stormy day, while a monk drearily tugs on the bell. Complaining about bickering denominations doesn’t make me want to sing praises to Jesus.
Honestly, it depresses me. I may agree with you on some issues Mr. Roberts, but your tone leads me to believe that the true motivation of this article lies somewhere within your ego.
If it is your intent to shed favorable light on your religion, then why not focus on the positivity that your God is supposed to extol, instead of trying to be the mediator of an age-old quarrel over disputed scriptures?
