The Bucs were unable to mount another comeback, thus putting an end to a tremendous season with a 72-64 loss.
DeChellis was disappointed about the outcome, particularly for his seniors, but was pleased with the effort showed by his team.
“Our players played extremely hard,” he said. “My hats off to them (Georgia Southern). I felt bad for our seniors. We had a wonderful season.”
It was a wide-open conference tournament that also saw the South Division Champions, College of Charleston, drop their quarterfinal tournament game to Davidson College.
“I don’t think there’s a whole lot of difference from top to bottom,” DeChellis said.
DeChellis also knew that Georgia Southern was a dangerous team, one that played much better than their No. 4 seed indicated.
“I thought they were a team that could get on a roll,” he said. “My hat’s off to them.”
Decoster led the Bucs with 20 points on eight of 15 shooting from the field.
He was joined in double digits by Childress with 18 points and Renaldo “Scooter” Johnson with 10.
The backcourt tandem of Peterson and Jenkins led the Eagles with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Despite their early exit from the conference tournament, the Bucs (18-10) improved +4 games from their record of 14-15 last season and their conference record (13-3) was +5 from their record of 8-8 last season.
