Washington County residents will soon have another reason to be proud of their heritage as The History of Washington County, Tennessee – a book recounting life in the county in years past – comes into print.
Dr. Colin Baxter, ETSU history professor and president of the Washington County Historical Association, contributed a chapter to the 1,400-page book, which includes 175 photographs, maps and illustrations.
In his chapter, Baxter discussed Washington County’s role during World War II.
“From my point of view, the most enjoyable part of putting the book together was talking to people who remembered what it was like in the late 1930s and getting personal stories,” Baxter said. “There is nothing like hearing how life was like years ago and how times have changed.”
Baxter noted that he also enjoyed finding out about a Buffalo soldier, born in Washington County, who served in an African military unit out west and fought during the Spanish-American War.
In addition to Baxter’s work, 125 other writers contributed to the making of the book, which was edited and compiled by Joyce and Gene Cox.
Preparation for the book began during the Tennessee Bicentennial in 1996 and covers everything from law and medicine to music.
“Anyone born in Washington County or living here would find it a fascinating book,” Baxter said.
The History of Washington County, Tennessee is available now at a special prepublication price of $58.75, including tax and shipping.
Those wishing to purchase the book should contact Baxter for an order form. Following its publication date scheduled in roughly two months, the price will rise to $79.50, plus tax and shipping. Baxter may be reached at his office at 439-6694.
