Softball head coach Stephanie DeFeo added seven players to the Buccaneer program for the 2001-02 academic year, as announced last July.
Leading the class in third baseman Lindsay Lane of Erwin, Tenn.
She earned Player-of-the-Year honors while being an all-state selection.
“Lindsay is an outstanding infielder that will provide a lot of power at the plate,” DeFeo said.
The Buccaneers also added shortstop/outfielder Mary Beth Hazelwood and outfielder Alyson Towle, who both played prep softball at Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tenn.
“Mary Beth has a cannon for an arm and will contribute in the infield and outfield,” DeFeo said. “Alyson is extremely fast with an incredible arm.”
Also from Knoxville is another outfielder of the new class, Danielle Spetar.
“Danielle has incredible speed with a lot of potential at the plate,” DeFeo said.
Two more of the seven-player recruiting class hail from Chattanooga, in second baseman Emily Kirk and pitcher Lindsay Edmondson.
“Emily is very consistent both in the field and at the plate,” DeFeo said. “Lindsay is an incredible pitcher. She led her team to a state championship and I know she will add a lot to our staff.”
The only out-of-state player in the class is pitcher Jolene Halthaus. Halthaus played at Sidney High School in Sidney, Ohio.
“Jolene has a lot of potential as a pitcher,” DeFeo said. “She has a variety of pitches that will keep any batter off balance.”
The Bucs will begin the 2002 season in the South Carolina Tournament from Feb. 16-17. ETSU’s first home contest is tentatively scheduled for March 5, a doubleheader against Tennessee Wesleyan.
The softball program will be in its second year of existence.
The Bucs had a record of 14-35, and 9-11 in the Southern Confernce throughout the inaugural season.
The Bucs will play their games at Kiwanis Park, where they were 8-8 last season, compared to 5-21 on the road.
