Summer is officially over. We now have 15 weeks to make the most of every opportunity that we are given.
At the beginning of a semester, everything is at our fingertips, all that we have to do is decide what we want to set our minds to.
This is the time of year to decide what kind of person that you want to be.
This is a time of new beginnings and new dreams. If this is your first year in college, then this is the time to decide whether or not you want to be the same person that you were in high school. Fair warning, though, college is not high school and to survive here, it’s going to take more than it used to.
Every fall semester, I set new goals and try something completely new. I’ve found that this is the time in our lives that we can be anything and anyone that we want to be, and we won’t get another chance to do it. We can be actosr, journalists, politicians, programmers, and researchers. Anything that you have ever dreamed to be possible is possible in college. All that you have to do is decide what you want for yourself and go for it.
To try any of these out, all you have to do is find a student organization for you. For example, if you like acting and want to act, then you should join the theater department. To be in a play, all you have to do is be interested and audition.
If you like changing policies and standing up for the students’ better good, your good, then why not run for an office in SGA.
Every student organization can use a fresh voice and a new and innovative opinion.
There are all kinds of student organizations to check out if you want to be involved on this campus.
Being involved is not only a good way to make friends, but it’s also a way to stay in school. It has been proven that students who get involved in college make better grades, because they can manage their time better, and it also gives them a place on this campus that they have found is all their own. This means that you will keep coming back until you graduate because you know that you are making some kind of difference.
After college is over and you begin looking for a “real” job, then an employer isn’t only going to look at your grades, but they’re also going to look at how you applied yourself.
Being a part of a student organization means that you have teamwork skills as well as leadership ones. You know how to lead as well as follow. Employers love that. Joining an organization helps you form a special bond with your school and community and only someone who is involved truly understands that.
Start looking at bulletin boards on campus, sidewalk chalking, in the Culp University Center and even check with your adviser for what might be a good choice for you.
Being involved is the best thing about being in college and this is the only time in your life when you will have this kind of opportunity.
Carpe Diem, seize the day.
