ETSU’s Student Support Services launched an online tutoring service for students during the summer 2001 semester.
Blackboard Online Tutoring is currently available to students who need assistance in chemistry I and II, biology I for majors and non majors, pre calculus, calculus, and probability and statistics.
The program was created by Lisa Norris, education specialist from the Student Support Services.
“I started this venture with the help of our tutors and [Supplemental Instruction] leaders and plan to continue pursuing modern technology in hopes of reaching more students,” Norris said.
The student tutors and SI leaders hold their respective sessions online.
Each site includes information on the subject such as class handouts and study guides. Some also include group discussions.
“They have done a tremendous job in creating their sites,” she said.
The Student Support Services plans to add more subjects to Blackboard eventually.
Norris said these specific subjects were chosen because science and math “are and have been our most popular subjects in tutoring.”
While students are self-enrolling every day, there are still several who are not aware of the new program. Norris urges students to take part in the service.
“I started thinking that perhaps the online aspect of tutoring would be beneficial to students and they could receive tutoring help without physically having to be here in our office. There seems to be a demand of accessing information via internet. Tutoring is no exception,” she said.
