The world is full of missed opportunities. We all have them.
We let down other people because of missed opportunities. How many precious moments are wasted doing nothing? Sleeping till noon?
There are things that we could be doing to better ourselves and better the world around us. Why don’t we?
How many evening have we just sat in front of the television, staring at a mindless sitcom that really won’t make a difference in life whether we watched it or not?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while because I’m starting to learn that a thing such as a television is an evil contraption. It can suck you in for hours, sort of like a time machine does.
Each moment that I planned to do something productive was gone before I knew it.
I don’t think that I can put on my resume: “The best channel flipper in the Southeast.” There aren’t any openings for remote testers.
I decided that I wanted to make something of my life and I wanted to make a difference. But I can’t do that by doing nothing and hoping that the opportunity will just come to me.
Sometimes missed opportunities just aren’t found because they just weren’t looked for. You’ve got to put yourself out there and make yourself available for whatever may come.
Sometimes that means getting involved and other times that just means meeting people. Friends can make your best contacts for help.
So now what? Where do you go from here? Well, if you haven’t already, decide what you want to do in your life.
I didn’t say choose your career; I’m saying, set some goals. You can do more than just your career. It is true that one day – if not already – you’ll have a family and other obligations, but you can always spare a few minutes to help some one else out.
Maybe you could be a mentor to a child at an after school program. Maybe you could help clean up trash on the school grounds. Maybe you could help to plan a program that will educate the campus and community about issues that you care about.
There are many opportunities out there. There are many ways to help out and benefit others. Being a part of something such as volunteering can fill a void that you never knew existed.
