In a recent address, President Bush declared that though the terrorists who struck the World Trace Center towers may believe that they have scarred our nation’s soul, “they have not even touched it.”
In the face of tragedy, Americans join as one and generously contribute money or donate blood.
With this in mind, a group of local students hope to make an impact on those whose lives were forever changed Sept. 11.
“Pocket Change for Projects,” a program developed by the Student Social Worker Association, is an effort to raise funds for the Manhattan, N.Y., chapter of the Red Cross.
The money will be used to aid in the disaster relief efforts there.
Shannon Skinner, president of the Student Social Worker Association, said that the project began Sept. 12 following the terrorist attacks. Skinner stated that treasurer Jennifer Chalkley initially came up with the idea.
“Giving back to our community through service helps us in the field of social work,” he added.
To date the project has collected over $1,000.
Individuals can make their “pocket change” donations at one of several locations, including Johnson City Mall and shops at downtown Johnson City, Jonesborough and Kingsport.
On campus, students can contribute by dropping off their loose change at the social work department office in 218 Rogers-Stout.
The project will end Oct. 5.
The Student Social Worker Association operates fund-raising and community service projects year round, including canned food and clothing drives, Coalition for Kids and Angel Tree.
