ETSU’s Sigma Kappa sorority is holding its annual lollipop sale this week to raise money for the national Alzheimer’s Association and its local chapter in Johnson City.
The $1 lollipops are on sale at the ETSU amphitheatre from 11a.m to 2 p.m. this week, and will be sold at booths in the D.P. Culp Center next week.
Proceeds from the sale will be given to the national Alzheimer’s Association who in turn will disburse a portion to the local chapter.
“Alzheimer research and support is one of our four philanthropies,” said Emily Wagar, Sigma Kappa’s public relations chair. “This disease affects more than 4 million Americans, and many of us will be affected by it in our lifetime either directly or we might know someone with it.”
Sigma Kappa was the first national sorority to recognize the need for Alzheimer research and support for patients and their families. In 1984 the sorority officially incorporated the Alzheimer cause into its service activities.
In addition to the lollipop sale, ETSU’s Sigma Kappa is partnering with Johnson City’s Alzheimer Association for the Oct. 13 Memory Walk. This fundraiser, held at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, will help the local association continue its services which include a telephone helpline for Alzheimer patients and families, support groups and educational programs and materials.
Each year Sigma Kappa also participates in a swing-a-thon to benefit Alzheimer research and education.
“One day we’re all going to get old,” Wagar said. “Supporting research for this is definitely important.”
