Pianist Sergiy Komirenko will give a free concert Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. in Mathes Hall.
Komirenko, born in 1985 in Kiev, Ukraine and since 1998 a resident of Raleigh, N.C., is the year 2000 winner of the Music Teachers National Association-Baldwin Junior High School Piano Competition.
“I think it is going to be a very inspiring concert,” said Dr. Benjamin Caton, professor of music at ETSU.
Caton said it is unusual for such a young musician to perform at ETSU, but Komirenko is very gifted for his age. Komirenko began performing at the age of 5.
Since moving to North Carolina, he has performed with the Raleigh Civic Symphony and the Winston-Salem Symphony.
The concert will feature very technically demanding works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Johann Sebastian Bach, Maurice Ravel and Serge Prokofiev.
Caton said he particularly enjoys listening to gifted teenage pianists. He said at that age, a performer’s personality really comes through. Pianists are more fearless at that age.
“There is an excitement about their playing, and they’re uninhibited with the literature,” Caton said.
Caton says that those who come to the concert will be dazzled by his performance. “You just feel the electricity of his playing,” he said.
The Appalachian Music Teachers Association, the ETSU department of music and ETSU Friends of Music sponsor the concert.
A reception will be held after the concert. For more information, call the department of music at 439-4270.
