The Buccaneer men and women’s cross country teams competed in the Furman Invitational last weekend in Greenville, S.C.
The men’s team finished 18th overall in the 30-team field, being led by freshman Bradley Yewer, who was nursing a calf strain.
“I was unhappy with my time and position,” said Yewer, who placed 45th in a time of 26 minutes and 33 seconds for the eight-kilometer course.
“I just wanted to get through it without serious damage. We have two weeks until the conference (meet), (I’m hoping) to get off treatment and do the business at conference.”
The Bucs No. 2 runner was senior Greg Sprowl, who also had an uncharacteristically difficult race, finishing 77th in a time of 27:00.
“I’m more fit than I’ve ever been, but the preparation was not there today,” Sprowl said. “I have two weeks to figure out what went wrong today because I’m equally capable of running well or falling flat on my face depending on my preparation.”
ETSU’s No. 3 runner was sophomore David Haefner, who was also nursing a calf injury, in 107th place (27:27). Senior Mike Farkas (29:35) and sophomore Lawrence Lockhart (30:08) finished 240th and 249th, respectively, to round out the team’s scoring.
The Bucs scored 434 points behind the Atlanta Track Club’s winning total of 70 points.
On the women’s side, ETSU finished 16th out of 28 teams as sophomore Emily Chaney was the Lady Bucs’ No. 1 runner for the first time this season.
Chaney finished 46th overall in a time of 23:42 for the 6K course, compared to the normal 5K distance that the women run.
Senior Rosaline Addo also ran strong for ETSU, finishing just nine seconds behind Chaney in 61st place (23:51).
Senior Lauren Campbell was the Lady Bucs No. 3 runners in 119th place (24:57) with Jennifer Howard (27:33) and Kimberly Simmons (30:06) finishing in 214th and 249th place, respectively.
The Lady Bucs finished with 460 points behind Brighman Young’s 25-point, first-place finish.
Both squads will next compete in the SoCon Championships on Oct. 27 in Charleston, S.C.
