If late-night channel surfing is becoming a sport, tune into something different.
A refreshing live television show has hit the airwaves, and viewers agree that it couldn’t be funnier.
Matt Denton, producer/ director of “Late Night with ETSU,” said the show came about late one night when he and several other students, who had been working on a project in Warf-Pickle Hall, decided to take a break from studying and go into the studio.
They turned on the lights and cameras and flashed the studio’s phone number across the screen.
“We thought we were goofing off, but people actually started to call,” Denton said.
The group received more than 20 calls that night. “I knew I was on to something,” he added.
According to Denton, the program is a talk/comedy/variety show with live music and parodies.
“We have a lot of Saturday Night Live type skits. We also do a lot of off-the-wall stuff. Last week, we did a special entitled ‘Osama bin Laden’s Halloween safety tips,'” Denton said.
Other popular segments of the show include Stacey McCloud’s love advice and the Glow-Stick Warrior, a superhero who defends the ETSU campus.
There is also a routine by Tom and Charlie, which is directed to the male audience, and is the opposite of Stacey’s segment.
The show is performed live, which adds to its uniqueness. Viewers are encouraged to phone the studio during the show.
The show is staffed by 10 students and six volunteers.
“I put 10-20 hours a week into every one-hour episode,” Denton said. “There’s a lot that goes into it.”
The show sometimes even has an in-studio audience.
“I’ve heard stories about people who drive to campus just to see the show,” Denton said.
“Late Night with ETSU” airs every Wednesday night at midnight on campus Channel 11.
