The ETSU Memorial Center was bustling with activity Tuesday night as students participated in the annual Homecom-ing Relays.
The seven co-ed teams, made up of three women and three men each, represented Greek and other campus organizations.
Individuals took part in the potato sack, sporting goods, sweatshirt and rubber chicken relay races. There was also tug-of-war and dizzy-whiz events, in which players took turns spinning around a baseball bat before performing a relay.
According to Jon Walker, director of campus recreations, the relays are an event that the staff and students look forward to each year.
Walker said that this year’s relays went smoothly. “Everyone got into the spirit of the night,” he explained. “There were no arguments among rival teams,” he said. “Obviously, when you have a rubber chicken event, things shouldn’t get overly competitive.” He said that there was a smaller crowd this year, but that the overall objective of the relays was accomplished – the participants and observers all had a good time.
Brittany Lippscomb, an Alpha Kappa member, also enjoyed the events. Her team won the first round, only to be defeated during the second.
“It was the most exercise I’ve gotten in a long time,” she said. “It was a lot of fun, and I’d definitely do it again.”
Walker hopes that next year’s homecoming events will be housed in ETSU’s new Center for Physical Activity, which is scheduled to open sometime in March.
The winners of the Homecoming Relays will be announced at the Homecoming game Saturday at 2 p.m.
