The University School chapter of National BETA Club answered President George W. Bush’s call for each American student to donate $1 for the relief of Afghanistan children by collecting $325.57 from its student body.
The National BETA Club, an honor society for students with exemplary grades and character, sponsored the campaign “BUCKS from BUCS: Helping Afghan Children,” to collect donations from the 543 students in kindergarten though 12th grade.
Kindergarteners through fifth graders earned money by collecting cans to be recycled.
Many of the classes had 100 percent student participation and were recognized at the school for their outstanding contributions.
The project was organized by Jessica Collins, BETA Club president; Josh McVeigh, BETA treasurer; Robyn Corell, an active BETA member; and Catherine Edwards, faculty adviser.
“Our school was very generous in giving, and I am so proud that we can come together as a school and community during such a horrifying moment in time,” Collins said.
