The sophomore Honors class at ETSU is cooking up a special project at the Johnson City Seniors’ Center next week.
As part of their “Honors Artistic Experience” course, the students will be baking, building and decorating gingerbread houses at the Seniors’ Center located at 607 E. Myrtle Ave.
The houses will be displayed at until Dec. 14, then donated to the Ronald McDonald House located adjacent to Johnson City Medical Center.
The ETSU Honors students will build and decorate on Thursday from 9:45-11:05 a.m., according to course professor Catherine Murray of the ETSU department of art and design.
Dr. Rebecca Pyles, director of the University Honors Programs, says Murray thought up the gingerbread house idea and the students decided the holiday project was a fun way to carry out an assignment while giving something back to the community.
Murray says she has done intergenerational projects with the Seniors’ Center before, and “I really enjoy these experiences.”
The concept of sharing the finished creations with the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House was also appealing to her because “they are going through a tough time being away from home with a sick child during the holidays.”
