ETSU now offers graduates an accelerated pre-medical program that will prepare them for acceptance to medical school.
Applicants must already have earned a B.A. or B.S. degree, but may not have previously planned to apply for medical school and may obtain the requirements in the 15-month FASTRACK program.
The FASTRACK program requires students to complete four basic science one-year sequences in general biology, chemistry, physics and organic chemistry. All courses include labs.
The FASTRACK program is an unofficial one, but it may provide students who had not previously considered a medical career with an opportunity to pursue that career path.
Dr. Lattie Collins, director of ETSU’s medical Professions advisement, will provide interested individuals with the necessary information.
Collins said that despite “non-traditional student” backgrounds, the good students get into medical school.
Although the FASTRACK program is not an official program yet, Collins said the university has had nurses, accountants, two lawyers, and many people in education go through the program and get accepted into medical schools.
Collins said non-traditional students need to demonstrate academic ability and an ability to achieve in the future, especially in the areas of math and science.
He also said a record of volunteer service is helpful for medical school applicants.
In addition to medical school, the program offers the necessary prerequisites for dental, optometry, veterinary, pharmacy and other similar professional schools.
