Students at ETSU may apply for the 2002-2003 Tennessee Legislative Internship Program in Nashville.
Thirty-four colleges and universities across Tennessee are participating in the program. Four to five students from each college and university are selected every year to perform intern duties with the Tennessee General Assembly. Kenneth Mijeski, professor and former chairman of the political science department, said the program is approximately from Jan. 8 to May 31.
Students wishing to apply for the next intern session must register in September. They will be required to submit a letter of evaluation, transcripts, and they will be interviewed several times.
“You don’t have to be a political science major to participate in the program,” Mijeski said. “In fact, two of our four students (interns) are not.”
Interns are responsible for performing legislative duties such as attending weekly meetings concerning state and government legislative issues.
The internship program requires that students devote their full time to legislative duties. They may not hold another job or take college classes during the intern session.
Students are reimbursed for their expenses while in Nashville. They are paid $325 a week for living expenses and are given an advance payment of $325 for relocation purposes. Interns should realize that these payments are taxable income.
