ETSU’s Career Placement and Internship Services and the College of Education are sponsoring the Education Career Fair in the Culp Center Ballroom today from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The career fair is open to all students and alumni who are interested in seeking a career in education.
The event will begin at 8 a.m.with a welcoming meeting for the school systems. Then at 8:30 the doors will open for students.
“We think that this year there will be record numbers of school systems,” said Calvin Purvis, assistant director of Career Placement and Internship Services. “States planning to attend are West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina and Georgia.”
Students need to arrive early so they will be able to meet with the school system they desire to set up a interview with.
The school systems will be ready to talk with students and schedule afternoon interviews from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Students who do not arrive early are not guaranteed a 30-minute interview with the school system they desire to talk with.
According to Purvis, students should come prepared for an interview. Students need to bring multiple copies of their resumes and their portfolio if it has been prepared.
This is so administrators will have copies to keep.
Individuals should look one level better than you would look at the actual job because you only have one chance to have a first time impression. School systems are looking for mannerisms and attire.
“In the past we have seen students who have had job offers at this actual event, but that’s not the norm. The norm is that the school systems interview you for the first time here at this career fair. Then invite you to come to their home region, so you can make sure this is the best fit circumstance,” Purvis said. “Because hiring you without seeing their school system may or may not be something you are comfortable with.”
It’s not uncommon to have a sign on bonus or a debt waver when the need of teachers are extremely desired, Purvis said.
Students need to come early and be prepared.
“This should be a wonderful day for teachers,” Purvis said.
