Eight ETSU students were recently inducted into Who’s Who Among American Students in Universities and Colleges for 2001-02.
The students, who were honored for their academic and community achievements, were selected through a rigorous process that included an interview before the Who’s Who Selection Committee in fall semester.
At the Who’s Who induction ceremony held on March 20, the students received certificates from Dr. Wayne Andrews, vice president for administration at ETSU.
The 2001-2002 inductees are:
Kristi Abbott, a senior majoring in psychology from Grandview, Tenn., who is in the University Honors Program, Volunteer ETSU, and has served as a Preview and Orientation Leader. She also served as a small group leader and in the prayer ministry for the Baptist Student Union.
Her community service includes work with the American Red Cross Blood Drive, the American Heart Association Heart Gala, and Munsey Memorial Shepherd’s Breakfast. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta, Gamma Beta Phi, Psi Chi and Golden Key honor societies.
Nora Azzazy, a junior majoring in biology from Knoxville, is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, President’s Pride, and several honor societies including Beta Beta Beta, Gamma Beta Phi, the National Residence Hall Honorary and Phi Kappa Phi. She organized Battle of the Bands for the Residence Hall Association, has served as vice president of Stone Hall Council, and has been a Preview Leader. She has volunteered at the Red Cross, the Haven of Mercy, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Humane Society and at Girls Incorporated.
Candace Banks, a graduate student pursuing a degree in education, teaches pre-kindergarten at North Side Elementary School in Johnson City. She has been a member and secretary of ETSU Gospel Ensemble, and is treasurer of the Student Tennessee Education Association.
She is also a delegate to the Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a resident advisor at ETSU, and is a member of several honor societies including the National Honor Society, Golden Key, Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi.
Her community service includes fundraising for Carter County flood victims and American Red Cross disaster relief, and work with Read Across America and the Make a Difference School Improvement Project.
Cheryl DeWitt, a senior psychology major from Afton, Tenn., is a member of Alpha Xi Delta. She has served on Panhellenic Hall Council and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Gamma Beta Phi and Golden Key honor societies.
She is a member of Baptist Student Union, has served as an Admissions Ambassador, and has participated in Alternative Spring Break through Volunteer ETSU. She has volunteered at Johnson City Medical Center, Small Miracles Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center, Girls Incorporated and the Haven of Mercy.
Patrick Fessenbecker is a junior from Knoxville, who is pursuing degrees in history, English and philosophy. He is a member of the Golden Key Society, President’s Pride, Phi Kappa Phi and the University Honors and English Honors Programs. He is a resident advisor and a member of the Residence Hall Associ-ation where he currently serves as president.
He sings with the University Chorale and has volunteered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He is a published poet, who has created and teaches a poetry class for intermediate school students, and he also teaches a creative writing workshop at Pine Oaks Assisted Living Center.
Surekha Murti, a senior psychology major from Memphis, has served as a Preview leader and is a member of University Productions and the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society.
She is a resident advisor and a tutor for the Writing and Communications Center. She is public relations chair of Alpha Phi Omega and she has volunteered at Girls Incorporated, the Boys and Girls Club, Haven of Mercy and Campus Clean-up.
Chad Reed, a junior political science major from Roanoke, Va., is president of the Student Government Association and has served on several campus standing committees and councils. He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, a Preview and Orientation leader, programming chair for Inter-Fraternity Council, and scholarship chair of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
He has done community service work with Carter County Adult Education, A Leg Up Thera-peutic Riding Center, and the Cherokee Immersion Project. He also served as campus co-chair of ETSU Pride Week. He is also a third-degree black belt and a certified instructor in Tae Kwon Do.
Mandy Trevino, a senior majoring in biology and Spanish from Unicoi, Tenn., is of Beta Beta Beta, where she has served as president, Sigma Delta Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Lambda.
She also serves on the Student Advisory committee as a representative from the biology department, and is a member of the Spanish Club, the Philosophy Club, where she serves as philanthropy chair, and the Roteract Club.
She has volunteered at Johnson City Medical Center and at the VA hospital and with the Beaver Creek Clean-Up. She is fluent in Spanish and volunteers as an interpreter with the Kellogg program at ETSU.
