It’s finally finished. At least most of it is anyway.
The new Center for Physical Activity, which opened in mid April, is still undergoing some minor construction and landscaping work.
One of the major problems concerns the wood flooring on the basketball courts, the racketball court and the aerobics area.
The varnish was applied too heavily in all three areas causing the excess finish to seep out from in between the cracks when it is walked on, said John Kroll, assistant director of operations for the Center for Physical Activity.
“What we’re going to try to do is resurface them within the next two weeks,” he said.
Since the facility is not yet finished and it was the contractor’s mistake with the flooring, Kroll said he expects no additional cost to the university.
“To my understanding it won’t cost us anything,” he said. “It is being discussed right now between the general contractor and the university.”
Despite the problems with the flooring, the basketball courts are the only inaccessible area.
“The basketball courts are offline. The positive spin on all of this is that we have a lot of other stuff to offer,” Kroll said. “I certainly don’t want people to make much out of it. We’re open and not at 100 percent capacity but we’re serving the (campus) community very well.”
Kroll said that there is a punch card, which is essentially a point by point inspection list, with other minor things that need to be checked, but he expects the contractors to take care of it.
“There is still work to be done in here and anything not done right will be fixed,” he said.
Some other features of the multi-million dollar facility that are not yet complete are the multipurpose lighted ball fields, a courtyard and some landscaping.
