For students who want to pour their lives into someone else this summer, Girls Incorporated of Bristol may be a good fit.
As a national nonprofit youth organization, Girls Inc. is dedicated to inspiring young girls to be strong, smart and bold.
For over 60 years, this organization has developed after-school programs that encourage girls to fully explore their physical, intellectual, and emotional potential. The research-based curriculum addresses issues such as math, science, leadership, media literacy, drug prevention and adolescent health.
“Girls Inc, is always looking for upbeat college students who are willing to share their talents and time, and teach the girls after school,” said Kate Bond, a graduate assistant in the office of student life and leadership.
Among this summer’s many opportunities, Girls Inc. is sponsoring its annual “Take our Girls to Work Day” on May 16.
An initiative designed to foster optimism and career ambition, people of all occupations are encouraged to “adopt” a girl for the day to introduce her to the working world and job options she may have been unaware of.
“Take our Girls to Work Day” is an opportunity to build girls’ hopes and dreams about having a good career,” Bond said. “It’s their chance to see both women and men as positive role models in the workforce.”
In the past, a variety of community volunteers have participated.
Girls have gone to construction sites to operate bulldozers, some have helped anchor the news and others have put down dirt on the track of the Bristol Motor Speedway.
Anyone interested in volunteering for this event or for other summer activities can contact Girls Inc. of Bristol at 276-669-8686.
