This past week, the ETSU athletics has seen its share of highs and lows. I would like to comment on some things that were said in a local newspaper earlier this week about the Buccaneer football program.
A certain Kingsport writer made some degrading comments about the Bucs, including the statement that ETSU should “abandon the football program because nobody wants to see it.”
Personally, although I am not the biggest fan of the Bucs, it was an undeserved statement that buried our program. I honestly believe that if “professional writers” continue to bash their subjects and lower the interest to the football program, they should not be allowed to provide coverage.
On a local web site dedicated to the messages and thoughts of ETSU sports fans (www.soconhoops.com), several people have expressed outrage at his comments. It’s a testament to the fan support that they want him removed from coverage.
It was embarrassing to me as a writer, and I hope that I never make any ridiculous statements like those from this major local paper. It is a shame that he can continue to get away with his outrageous remarks on a weekly basis. It should be stopped.
The Mountaineers are traveling from Boone, N.C., and will bring a strong fan base for this weekend’s game. This will be one game that the students will need to be out for.
With the support from the fans, the Bucs pull out a win and set the foundation for a strong season-ending rally.
