Freshman Erin Ashton broke the school record for points in a season as ETSU rolled to a 7-1 victory over The Citadel Sunday and broke the record for most goals in a season (9) Friday, as the Buccaneers cruised to 9-0 win over South Carolina State.
On Sunday, Ashton had one goal and three assists to extend her point total to 25, breaking Kristin Redfern’s record of 20.
The Bucs scored their first goal at the 12:29 mark as a cross from Ashton was deflected by Andrea Brown and knocked in by freshman Lauren Kulish to give ETSU the 1-0 lead. Brown later scored her first of two goals for the day at the 16:31 mark when she received a cross from Ashton that found the back of the net. Brown would close out the period scoring her second goal of the day off of an Elizabeth Smith cross to push the Buccaneer lead to 3-1.
In the second period, the Bucs capitalized off of a shot by Smith that hit the top post and was knocked in by Ashton at the 61:35 mark. Johnson City’s Lena Summers later received a gift as a long cross found the back corner of the net in the 65th minute to put the Buc up 5-1. Freshman Catherine Olsen scored the first goal of her career after one of Brown’s shots hit the top post and Olsen knocked it in. The final Buc goal came in the 84th minute as a cross from Ashton was headed in by Smith to finalize the score at 7-1.
“This weekend has given us confidence that we can score in the attacking third,” Buccaneer head coach Heather Henson said. “This sets us in the right direction for our final four conference games.”
Brown ended the day with two goals and two assists, while keeper Heather Sanden had four saves. The Bucs out-shot The Bulldogs 25-8.
The Bulldogs’ only goal came in the 20th minute of play as Lauren Merchant fired a shot into the top left corner of the net.
On Friday, Ashton scored four goals to break the record for most goals scored in a season, as the ETSU cruised its win over S. C. State.
ETSU scored five goals in the first period of play to take a demanding lead over the Bulldogs. Ashton scored the first two goals of the game with her first coming at the 21:10 mark and her second at the 22:38. Freshman Emily Blyveis scored her first career goal and the third goal of the game at the 24th minute of play. Summers scored off of a header from an Ericka de Paula corner kick to score the fourth goal of the period. With three seconds remaining in the half Brown scored off of a cross from freshman Catherine Olsen.
ETSU would open up the second period by scoring two goals in the first two minutes of play. Ashton would score her record-breaking goal and the third goal on the night off of an assist by Brown in the 45th minute of play. The Bucs struck again as sophomore Katherine Gentry scored off of an assist from Smith to push the score to 7-0 in the 46th minute. Ashton would then score her fourth goal in the 83rd minute of play after receiving a pass from freshman Leslie Lopez. Smith scored her first goal on the season and the final goal of the night in the 85th minute of play.
“We proved that we can finish,” Henson said. “We need to continue to focus on the attack and defense for 90 minutes, I felt like we played in sections tonight.”
ETSU out shot the Bulldogs 42-4. Sanden earned her second shutout of the season.
With the wins, ETSU moves to 4-6-1, 2-3-1 in the Southern Conference. The Buccaneers will return to action Friday against conference foe Western Carolina.
