A computer disc containing information about finding jobs and internships will be made available to ETSU students and alumni beginning in November.
Students will still be able to benefit from all of the services that the office of Career Placement and Internship Services currently offers, such as co-op opportunities, resume critiques and job placement assistance, but will no longer have to visit the office to get this information.
The disc will serve as a link between the students and faculty of the office via the computer.
“The intended purpose of the disc is to offer our services to students who may be working toward a degree from ETSU but live thousands of miles away,” said Dan Emmel, director of Career Placement and Internship Services.
The disc will primarily be given to those students who participate in freshmen orientation, transfer from another college, take only Internet courses or are about to graduate.
ETSU experiences a high rate of students enrolling in the university after they have completed their two-year degree from a community college. Therefore, students will receive the disc and become aware of available services before they even begin classes.
Tennessee also offers the Regent’s Degree where students can get a four-year degree by taking classes online.
“It is a very novel way of using technology with students who aren’t on campus,” Emmel said.
“The beauty of it is that the disc is constantly updated and is always current, unlike a brochure, which takes approximately three months to make a simple change.”
The department uses their own expertise and produces the discs in-house at a small cost. We only produce as many as we see fit, Emmel said.
“Students can still ask questions and receive feedback about their work through the convenience of the disc, because it is hot-linked back to my web site,” he said.
Fourteen community colleges from around the region will be in attendance at the Transfer Initiatives Conference Nov. 1 in the Culp Center, where Emmel will be distributing the first discs.
