East Tennessee State’s David Haefner finished 16th at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships and the Bucs struggled overall as a team Saturday.
Haefner finished the 10k race in 33:03.25 to lead ETSU to a 10th-place finish overall. Bradley Yewer placed 46th with a time of 33:56.09 followed by James Grufferty who finished 64th (34:28.70).
“I was happy with the way David ran today, but overall we have to learn how to compete at a higher level,” Buc head coach Dave Walker said.
On the women’s side, the Bucs finished 15th overall. Emily Chaney was the top ETSU finisher, placing 77th (24:42.57) followed by Katie Marshall who finished at 86th with a time of 25:04:46.
“This was a disappointing way to finish the season after running well at conference, but it shows how much we need to improve and develop,” Buc assistant coach Michelle Byrne said.
Tennessee swept the competition finishing first in both the women’s and men’s races.
