ETSU Physicians and Associates has announced the establishment of a new Center for Intensive Insulin Therapy.
The center will be located within the ETSU Physicians and Associates – Internal Medicine suite at 325 N. State of Franklin Road and will provide individualized care and support for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
ETSU Physicians and Associates is the clinical arm of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at ETSU.
“Our team includes a group of endocrinologists, nurses and dietitian educators who strive to bring state-of-the-art care to people living with diabetes,” said Dr. Alan Peiris, medical director of the Center for Intensive Insulin Therapy and professor of internal medicine at ETSU. “It is now very clear that excellent diabetes control will help prevent the onset and progression of complications related to the disease.”
According to Peiris, the center will specialize in providing intensive insulin management designed to improve blood sugar control while minimizing low blood sugar episodes.
Treatment options in intensive insulin therapy include multiple daily injections or use of an insulin pump.
The pump is a small battery-powered device worn externally like a pager that delivers insulin through tubing connected to a small catheter inserted into the skin. It enables patients to obtain a much greater level of flexibility in insulin delivery.
Peiris noted that not every patient with diabetes is a candidate for intensive insulin therapy or the pump. Referrals should be made by the primary care provider, and an endocrinologist with ETSU Physicians and Associates will review the patient’s history.
In addition to Peiris, the endocrinology division with ETSU Physicians and Associates includes Dr. Richard Jordan, Dr. Charles Stuart and Julie Kelly, R.D.Persons interested in learning more about the center should call 439-7280.
