Dr. Elizabeth McCord, an associate professor of ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine has been named by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft to the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women on Oct. 29.
A group of 30 people were chosen from all over the nation, from all disciplines and met with Ashcroft in Washington, D.C., during the First Symposium on Violence against Women.
Sen. Bill Frist nominated McCord.
McCord said the advisory committee will help to increase public awareness about domestic violence and will also help guide the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Any violence in any relationship would be domestic violence,” McCord said. “Those things are serious. Seek help early with a nurse practitioner or other services.”
McCord has been part of ETSU’s faculty since 1996. She has been involved in research relating to women’s health and domestic issues for several years.
She began her curriculum doing public speaking at the University of Illinois at Rockford.
Her research consists of communication preferences of both men and women about domestic violence issues. She works with men and women about domestic violence issues. She also works with men in helping them find ways of treating them and focuses on health problems.
McCord is involved with a new research project in which she works with men who are batterers, focusing on health problems and what form of communication they prefer about this problem.
She also has presented across the United States and in England on medical, communication and spiritual issues related to domestic violence to community groups and professional meetings.
