The summer of rain is now over and school is beginning.
If you are new to ETSU, you have probably noticed an enormous building behind Rogers-Stout and next to the Culp Center. That is the library!
It would be a shame not to go into such a big, cool-looking building! Inside, you will find books, videotapes, audio CDs, journals and magazines.
Most of the time, you will be visiting because of class assignments. If you have some free time, check out a book or CD for fun – it’s free! The Barbara Jaffe Silvers Collection on the second floor is a great place just to browse and find new things to read.
Probably most of your activities here will involve books and journal articles for your classes. Both of these activities start with the computers spaced throughout the library.
You can search for books on the computer or change to “Find Articles” to get journal articles for your courses. A lot (but not all) of the journal articles are full text on your screen, so you can print those out or e-mail them to yourself. And yes, they are real scholarly journal articles, not weird things you found on Google between “Lord of the Rings” tribute pages and interviews with reality show contestants.
If you are off-campus, you can access our page at http://sherrod.etsu.edu. If you follow the Find Articles link, you will be asked for some ID. Just insert your ETSU z-name account (look yourself up on the main site under Find People if you don’t know) and the tiny number at the bottom of your ID card and you’re in. This is great for those of you who live far away!
I know students and faculty are busy with schoolwork. Nevertheless, I always end these columns with a book recommendation. This time, it’s Edwin Torres’s Carlito’s Way – a stark book about street life in New York. The call number is PZ4.T692 and it’s on the third floor.
Pretend you are in the Millennium Falcon at the Library!
