The Lady Bucs moved up to second place in the second round of the Unlimited Potential/Bay Tree Classic.
The first round of the classic was led by cross-conference rival Western Carolina. The Lady Bucs were only two strokes back off the lead, finishing the round in third.
Ashley Barton led the team individually, playing the course even par for the round and finishing tied in fourth in individual scoring.
Finishing in the top 10 was Natalia Giraldo in a six-way tie for sixth, a stroke back from Barton.
Southern Illinois and UNC Willington were tied for first in the individual category after the first round.
The rest of the team finished in the upper 70s and low 80s, led by Maria Ringdahl and Cindy Phillips who posted scores in the 70s with a 77 and 78, respectively.
Giraldo and Barton again led the Bucs with an even par and a one-over, respectfully, for the second round. With that, the Lady Bucs were able to pass first-round leader Western Carolina and tie with UNC-Willington who was able to stay in second.
Defending champions Coastal Carolina surged forward with a tournament record 293 heading into the clubhouse after two rounds of play. The Lady Bucs were just five strokes back of the lead headed into Sunday’s final round.
In the individual race, Barton moved up one spot to tie in third with Giraldo who jumped all the way up from a tie in sixth.
Michelle Jarman of UNC-W moved into sole position of first with a three-under par for the round, seven strokes ahead of the Bucs.
The Lady Bucs are faring far better this year in second after two rounds then last year when they were in 14th place.
Tennis
ETSU men’s tennis opened up their season this past weekend at the 37th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships held in Georgia. University of Auburn came in seeded first for the tournament. Host school Georgia had two players in the top seeds, 3 and 8 in Division I. Posada was seeded 15th in Division I. Florida came in with four players seeded in the top eight in Division II play
Overall the Southern Intercollegiate Championships was a tournament of upsets. In Division II play ETSU pulled off the biggest upset beating No. 1-seeded Tennessee, while Duke upset No. 2 Florida.
The men’s tennis moved on to the quarterfinals winning in their games in Division I and II on Saturday. Led by sophomore standout Oscar Posada who won all of his matches including his final match against Georgia’s John Isner who was seeded eighth, 6-4, 6-4.
In Division II play, sophomore Felix Insaurralde beat MTSU’s Greg Pollack in two sets, 6-2, 7-5, on Saturday. Insaurralde’s biggest win though was his last on Friday when he upset No. 1-seeded Ben Rogers of Tennessee.
The Bucs were less fortunate in doubles play where Posada and Moises Serrano fell to Vanderbilt by default.
Mercer University defeated the Buccaneer team of Fiuri and Insaurralde, also by default.
In play on Sunday Posada fell in the semi finals to Brown, seeded 4th of Vanderbilt, (7-6,4-6,6-4) in Division I play.
