The Writing and Communication Center is making it a goal to visit every English 1010 and 1020 classroom this fall to make students aware of the services they offer.
“By reaching them early, we can get them in here and get them the help they need,” said Rob Russell, director of the WCC.
“Most of what we do here is one-on-one tutoring,” Russell said. Help is offered on a wide range of topics including documentation, getting started on a speech or even analyzing an entire paper.
The center also has a library of brochures and books on topics related to speech, writing and interviewing for a job.
For students getting ready to graduate, the WCC offers a comprehensive program to prepare individuals for job interviews that consists of a mock interview and analysis.
“We videotape the interview, and then we sit down with you and look at how it went,” Russell said, adding that grammar and body language are evaluated closely. After going over any problem areas, an appointment is made to allow the individual to practice the correct techniques.
Online help is also available via e-mail for quick questions or the university’s Blackboard online course system for help with an entire paper.
Russell said that these tools seem to be the most helpful for ETSU students who take classes either online or at other campuses,
“There are some nursing students down in Cleveland who use (online services) quite a bit,” Russell said.
