The Carroll Reece Museum will be premiering three new exhibits on Thursday Nov. 4 from 5-7 p.m.
The new exhibits are “Photogravure” by Jon Goodman, “A Blending of Purpose” by Jessa Decker-Smith and “Epoch Locale” by Jonathan Hounshell.
Goodman is one of the leading creators of photogravure, a process that makes a print from a picture negative. He has had his work exhibited all over the United States and Europe.
His photogravures are usually done of other people’s photographs and he has done them for such photographers as Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Dorothea Lange and Robert Mapplethorpe. However, the exhibit at the Reece Museum will contain photogravures of pictures he has taken himself.
“He usually doesn’t do exhibits of his own work. This is kind of special,” a representative of the museum said.
Along with Goodman’s work, two masters of fine arts students, Decker-Smith and Hounshell, will be showing their work. Decker-Smith will be showing her collection of functional pottery. Hounshell, a printmaking student, will premier his exhibition of triptychs, a set of three prints that correspond with each other. “This is their thesis. They must do this to graduate so it’s kind of important,” the museum representative said.
Some of the upcoming events at the museum include a Veteran’s Day exhibit and the annual Poinsettia Memory Tree.
The veteran’s exhibit which is called “Veteran’s History Project: The Exhibit” will open on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to coincide with the signing of the armistice that marks Veteran’s Day. The representative of the museum said, “The exhibit will feature mostly WWII but it will have other memorabilia.”
The poinsettia tree will start in December and carry on until Christmas break. It will be made of over 150 live poinsettias, which are purchased as tributes or memorials to an individual by their family and friends. After the tree is disassembled, the plants are taken to the VA and other local hospitals and given to patients there.
The Goodman exhibit will be in the museum from Nov. 4-Dec. 18. The two student exhibits will be in place from Nov. 4-22. Goodman will also be holding a gallery talk on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. For more information call the Reece Museum at 439-4392.
