It is the greatest superhero movie of all time. Spiderman 2 took an audience by storm this past summer. Many fans wanted more to the first Spiderman movie. Spiderman 2 gave them that and more. Taking in over $783 million dollars at the box office worldwide there was plenty to cheer about. But in this day where DVD’s can’t be trusted anymore, is Spiderman 2 worth the $20?
First off all, if you’ve seen the movie, then you would know that the movie alone is worth the price of $20. With that being said let’s look at the special features of Spiderman 2. Spiderman 2 is a two-disk “special edition” set.
There is a “Collectors Set Special Edition” that’s worth about $40. Their difference here is that the gift set comes with postcards of the teaser posters. Those were the posters with Spiderman in different positions throughout New York City with the words “destiny” or “sacrifice.”
It also comes with an exclusive limited edition portfolio of artwork on 25 comic book artists’ artwork inspired by Spiderman 2. A “Concept to Screen Comparison” portfolio which views various scenes of Spiderman 2 from there sketches to the final product. The last thing this “Collectors Set” is a reprint of The Amazing Spider-man issue No. 50 where Peter Parker gives up being Spiderman.
However both DVDs do come with the same DVD and the same special features.
On disk one there is a full track commentary with director Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, producer Avi Arad and co-producer Grant Curtis. There is also a technical commentary. The blooper reel is sometimes funny, but really only shows star actors proving that acting is not so easy.
One of the best features on disk one is the “Spidey Sense 2” feature. Taking idea from the first DVD, “Spidey Sense” is a “Pop-up Video” (remember that) of Spiderman 2. It gives the viewers facts and trivia through the film of Spiderman 2.
The four “web-i-sodes” are a brief look at Spiderman 2 before the movie came out. These were posted online to hype the release of the movie. It’s better to watch this before the movie so you can get excited and pumped up for the movie.
Rounding out the special feature on disk one is the Train “Ordinary” music video and preview to other movie including the original trailers to both Spiderman movies. The previews are a nice thing to watch before the movie as well. I like the Train music video, but I wish they would have included the Dashboard Confessionals’ video.
Disk two is really where the price of the DVD comes into play. For those who like to know what is happening while filming or what a behind the scenes look at how a movie is made, then this disk is especially for you. “Making the Amazing” is a 12-part documentary that takes a look at the making of Spiderman 2 in every technical aspect. Sam Raimi and the production team talk about what was done to make Spiderman 2 the best and most realistic Spiderman movie ever.

This 12-part documentary is two hours long and looks at everything from the script, to why the villain was chosen, to the costume, and the “Spyder-Cam.” Watching this documentary gives you a sense that everyone was trying really hard not to disappoint anyone, and how hard it can really be to make a movie.
“A Hero in Crisis” feature shows the ongoing battle with Peter’s personal problems. This feature also looks at why people can relate Spiderman as a person and a hero.
“Ock-umentary: Eight Arms to Hold You” is an in-depth look into the third star of the movie, Doc Ock’s mechanical tentacles and his jump from the comic to the big screen. This is also a great feature because is shows you how hard the production team work at making these tentacles become a real acting thing in the movie. It’ll also shock you how much of Doc Ock’s tentacles are real and how much is CGI in the movie.
“Interwoven: The Women of Spiderman” is a look at all the love interest of Peter Parker in the comic and in the movie.
“Enter the Web” is a multi-angle look at the pier sequence. This would have been a better feature if they gave the viewer more scenes with the multi-angle feature.
Finally there is an Art Gallery of famous comic-book artist Alex Ross’s drawings from the beginning sequence, a look at the Spiderman 2 video game and web links that let you access more to the movie.
I believe that Spiderman 2 is a must buy DVD. Even though there is a little more that could have been done, those are hardly noticeable and are over looked. The DVD is what a DVD should be like.
The entire special features on the one DVD and not scattered over three DVDs. However, if you just want the DVD buy the Special Edition.
If you’re the type of person that wants the two portfolios, the cool postcard, and the No. 50 issue of The Amazing Spider-man then the “Collectors Edition” is for you. Other than that, there is no difference in the DVDs.
Spiderman 2 is a must buy. Period.
