The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced its Oscar nominations for 2004.
The Aviator tops the list with 10 nominations including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, best director for Martin Scorsese and best picture.
Million Dollar Baby and Finding Neverland tied with seven nominations each, among them best picture and best actor.
Clint Eastwood was nominated for best director and best actor in the boxing saga Million Dollar Baby.
Scorsese has never won an Oscar, and his closest competition this year is likely to be from Eastwood, who won best director in 1992 for the western Unforgiven.
Mel Gibson’s top-grossing film for 2004, The Passion of the Christ, was not snubbed by Hollywood as many had predicted, but instead received three nominations, including original score, cinematography and makeup.
The biggest surprise of all was the snubbing of Michael Moore, who did not garner one nomination for his film Fahrenheit 9/11. Moore took a gamble not to have his film listed in the documentary category, hoping to have the Academy consider it for best picture. The plan did not work.
