Next Tuesday, March 22, Militia Group artists Copeland will release their sophomore effort, In Motion.
Three years have passed since their first record full-length release, Beneath the Medicine Tree, and a change in the line-up made me more than anxious to see what these guys had in store after winning the hearts of many scenesters. From the time I put Copeland’s new full-length In Motion in, I knew I was in store for something a little bit different from the indie-rock foursome.
In Motion starts off with a rockin’ drum beat on “No One Really Wins” from new drummer Jon Bucklew of Dennison Marrs fame.
Bucklew’s drums have added a whole new level to Copeland’s playing. Bucklew’s fills are harder and more complex than Rusty Fuller’s drumming from Beneath the Medicine Tree.
Copeland continues the trend of rockin’ a bit harder than usual with “Pin Your Wings.” This song is sure to be a hit with its catchy lyrics like, “Amanda, where did you find those crazy boys this time?”
The drums are not the only things that make this full-length more rockin’. Bassist James Likeness’s bass lines are harder and more complex than ever and guitarist Bryan Laurenson’s guitar sound is harder-hitting and more melodic than ever.
The old Copeland sound is still there with songs such as the extraordinarily gorgeous ballad “Sleep,” “Choose the One Who Loves You More” and “Kite.” These tracks put lead singer Aaron Marsh’s vocals on display in stunning fashion.
With songs like these, Marsh is sure to steal the hearts of girls once again.
Although this CD may take a bit of getting used to for long time Copeland fans, as their sound has changed quite a bit, first-time listeners are sure to find In Motion to be an instant favorite.
Standout Tracks: “No One Really Wins,” “Pin Your Wings,” “Sleep” and “Love Is A Fast Song.”
