On Friday, Feb 23, 2007, ETSU’s Computer and Information Sciences department met with faculty and administrators from 10 partnering community colleges in a conference designed to discuss transfer issues regarding computer science courses and curriculum changes.
In attendance were representatives from Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Chattanooga State Technical Community College, Mayland Community College, Mountain Empire Community College, Northeast State Technical Community College, Pellissippi State Technical Community College, Roane State Community College, Southwest Virginia Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College, and Walters State Community College.
The program was co-sponsored by the Office of Transfer Articulation, and assistance was also received from the Office of Adult, Commuter, and Transfer Services.
Throughout the day of discussion, the Computer and Information Sciences department discussed with the schools the challenges of transferring Computer Science courses.
Recommendations were offered including the importance of encouraging students to follow articulation agreements due to the limited number of free electives available in each concentration. Also, the CSCI major requirements were presented, which included that a grade of C- or higher in all CSCI major courses, including both common core and concentration specific courses, as well as a 2.5 GPA overall and within the major were required to graduate.
Several of the schools in attendance were interested in developing articulation agreements with Computer Science in cases where none previously existed. The existing agreements may be found online at: http://www.etsu.edu/admissions/transfer/agreements.asp.
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences along with Transfer Articulation office hope to make this a yearly event. If you would like more information about the event or transfer events with other departments at ETSU, please contact Dr. Amelia Brown at 439-4723 or e-mail her at abrown@etsu.edu.
