Graduating from college is a major step in a student’s life.? After four years of school, and in some cases five or six, a student is finally prepared to step into the “real world.” If only we knew exactly how to do that.
It isn’t that students aren’t motivated and eager to work; we are just unfamiliar with the process of getting a rsum into the hands of companies and places of business. Here is a little tip that all ETSU students should know – ETSU has Career and Internship Services.
This department, which is located in the ARC on the second floor of the Culp Center, is in charge of providing students with a list of employment opportunities, internships and co-ops. Career services can also help a student write a professional cover-letter and rsum.
?Before one can even begin to think about career choices, one must first have a professional rsum and cover letter. A rsum is important because it lets the prospective employer know why you are qualified for a particular job.?
A recent graduate of college will generally have a one-page rsum selling themselves to a potential company. This is not much space to show that you are a suitable candidate for the occupation.
Therefore, it is absolutely vital for a rsum to highlight the most important accomplishments and skills that set one apart from other applicants. Unfortunately, most students find it hard to form a professional rsum.??
Career services provides ETSU students with career consultants. These consultants, which are five peer students, are trained in the areas of rsums and cover- letters.
With an appointment, the career consultants will assist a student in narrowing the qualifications and experiences a student would want to include in a rsum. ???
Once you have a rsum completed, it is wise to have your rsum in an electronic form, in addition to the standard hard copy.
Yet, you should make sure that the electronic format of your rsum is compatible with the majority of operating systems.
A new addition the careers office has for students is the BucLink, which can be accessed at http://www.etsu.edu/careers/sasvrasp.
According to a statement written on the BucLink page, the service is designed to help students ” . search for full-time employment, internships and part-time jobs offered by a variety of employers in the Tri-Cities region, the Southeast and many other states.”
David Magee, director of Career and Internship Services, said “the service exposes students to more career opportunities.” ?
This site is ideal for students because it provides a list of job openings from different companies in different states, all conveniently located on a single page. ?
Also, the site is handy ?for students who are looking for a job or internship, but are feeling overwhelmed with searching for work, while maintaining a full course load. The BucLink is a simple way for students to stay informed of updated employment opportunities. ??
The BucLink is also great for commuter students. Before the BucLink, a student had to stop by the Career and Placement Services office in order to see what work opportunities were available. Now, a commuting student can access the Web site and search the job openings at their convenience.
The office also working on a “mentor system.” The program will encourage ETSU alumni to give students general advice about the business industry, as well as inform students of job openings they know of.
